What is socialization?
Socialization can be described as the process whereby an animal learns how to recognize and interact with its own species, other species such as cats and people. This interaction helps each learn the body language and communication skills of each other.
Owners who properly socialize their dogs from an early age reap the benefits during their dog’s lifetime. Socialization is crucial in order to prevent serious behavioral issues. Many dogs that are relinquished to shelters were not properly socialized. This is very tragic considering how easy it is to socialize a dog.
Puppy biting is a perfectly natural behavior. Puppies use their mouths to explore their surroundings, and they also use their teeth when playing. Fortunately this is something they usually grow out of when they lose their puppy teeth at around sixteen weeks.
Sadly, we hear about dogs who are abandoned or even euthanized because they were too aggressive and could not be controlled. The saddest thing about this is that, as an owner, you have the responsibility to train your dog well so that none of these things happen. A well-behaved dog can be a wonderful addition to the family.
