Why Do Cat’s Eyes Glow in the Dark?
Many people wonder why a cat’s eyes shine in the dark. This phenomenon is commonly seen at night, though it also may be reflected when a picture of a cat is taken with flash photography.
As a nocturnal hunter, cats have eyes that glow in the dark. This is because the organ of vision is provided with a lens and a kind of curved mirror positioned behind the retina, which is capable of reflecting a light cone towards the light source.
This mechanism has a double effect
It not only acts as a deterrent for other predators, but it also causes the light to reach the photoreceptor twice as much for night vision. The latter considerably increases the visual capacity of this nocturnal predator.
